Overcoming the ‘Valley of Death’ in Net Zero Innovation

Transitioning from innovative lab projects to practical industrial applications can be challenging, often described as the ‘valley of death.’ This is especially true for green technologies aiming for net zero emissions.

A new tool from Heriot-Watt University aims to tackle this issue. Named PrISMa (Process-Informed design of tailor-made Sorbent Materials), it uses advanced simulations and machine learning to assess the effectiveness and sustainability of materials for carbon capture before they’re used in real-world applications.

PrISMa helps researchers evaluate thousands of materials quickly by combining molecular simulations with economic and life-cycle evaluations. The platform has been tested in over 60 global case studies, including cement plants, and can cut costs by half compared to older technologies; it promises a leap forward in efficient carbon capture technology.
