Most impactful emerging technology
Winner: Appleton Woods

This award puts the spotlight on laboratories that have successfully developed emerging technology that has had a great impact on research projects.

Appleton Woods won this award for their partnership with Manchester BIOGEL distributing the ethical and sustainable Peptigel product range.

Appleton Woods has partnered with Manchester BIOGEL to be their exclusive UK distributor of the ethical and sustainable Peptigel product range. Like Appleton Woods, Manchester BIOGEL is an SME with similar values to our company. When we met with their team we clicked straight away and took to the quality and innovative products they had to offer. With 3D cell culture being an expanding area in medical research the need to reduce animal usage by having a synthetic alternative is critical and because this product allows much more control in creating your model it ultimately produces a much more clinically relevant environment to mimic your cell needs’ to generate reproducible results. An additional attraction for the partnership was the fact that the product in manufactured in the UK and can be shipped at room temperature therefore having less of an environmental impact by long shipping distances and the need for dry ice. To know supply won’t be an issue, when we have seen huge product shortages with competitor products over the past year, is a huge benefit as it means that vital research can continue without the risk of having to stop due to product shortages.” – Stewart Sale, Business Development and Product Manager at Appleton Woods

Manchester BIOGEL have a library of peer reviewed publications, and one patent using their peptide technology for applications within cell culture, bioprinting and drug discovery. Since the team was established in 2018, Manchester BIOGEL have doubled their revenue each financial year and have sold products directly to customers across the globe. They have also established six global distributorships in the last 12 months. At the beginning of 2021, the company was able to move into a larger office and lab space, quadrupling the square footage to accommodate the growth, and to bring cell culture facilities in house to support R&D.

Manchester BIOGEL’s products are disrupting the cell culture market, supporting more ethical and reproducible research. They are helping to bring the in vivo to the in vitro.
