The University of Bristol has been recognized for its leadership in artificial intelligence, winning two awards at the inaugural National AI Awards. The university secured the University of The Year and High Tech & Telecom titles, competing against UCL, Cambridge’s Blue Dot Impact, Intent HQ, and Cisco Webex.
Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, Professor Michele Acuto, credited Bristol’s decades of pioneering research for the wins, emphasising the institution’s focus on harnessing AI for societal benefit.
The University’s REASON project (Realising Enabling Architectures and Solutions for Open Networks) also won in the High Tech & Telecom category.
Professor Annela Seddon, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor of Research & Innovation, highlighted Bristol’s long history of AI innovation, including developing autonomous robots and launching an MSc program in machine learning in 1998. Bristol’s cutting-edge AI research continues today with projects like the Isambard AI supercomputer, supported by a £225 million government investment.
The SAS AI Cities Index 2024 ranks Bristol as the UK’s fifth most AI-ready city.
