The Royal Society of Biology and the Pirbright Institute have launched the Biorisk Professional Registration Scheme (BPRS) to standardise training and professional recognition for biorisk specialists. The initiative addresses the inconsistent training and lack of professional status in the field, including roles such as biological safety officers and bio-risk managers in various sectors like universities, research institutes, and government establishments.
The scheme was developed with input from experts and aims to enhance standards and consistency in bio-risk management across the bio-economy. It offers a benchmark for practitioners’ competence, with two levels of certification: the Registered Biorisk Adviser (RBA) for newcomers and the Registered Biorisk Specialist (RBS) for advanced professionals. This program will be supported by a searchable online register maintained by the RSB, benefiting professionals by enhancing their skills and credibility.
