PFAS: US limits ‘forever chemicals’ in tap water for first time

New research indicates that potentially millions of Americans are consuming water contaminated with PFAS chemicals. Consequently, the US has officially announced its first nationwide limit on a number of harmful chemicals discovered in tap water across the nation. This mandates local governments to legally eliminate six variations of these chemicals from water systems.

These chemicals, often termed ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment, have been linked to various health issues, including cancer. The government has allocated an additional $1 billion (£794 million) to expedite these changes. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has affirmed, “Drinking water contaminated with PFAS has afflicted communities across this country for too long,” stated EPA Administrator Michael Regan. “Today, I am proud to finalize this critical aspect of our roadmap, which will save thousands of lives and contribute to ensuring our children grow up healthier.”
