Notice a rise in price for Easter eggs this year? You have climate change to blame. The chocolate mostly used in Easter eggs is made from cocoa grown in West Africa. However, a humid heatwave has now heated up the crops and cut the fields massively. This heat is 10 times more likely to be due to human-induced climate change.
This has caused an increase of up to 50% in the price of some popular Easter eggs. The prices of cocoa have risen to almost $8,500 a tonne in just one week.
The cocoa trees specifically are vulnerable to sustainability impacts due to their growth being in a narrow area across the globe, mainly in West Africa. This year, West Africa experienced severe droughts and temperatures soaring above 40°C.
