New drug breakthrough in treatment of asbestos-linked cancer
In a major breakthrough, scientists have developed a drug to treat mesothelioma, a challenging cancer associated with asbestos exposure. The new therapy, ADI-PEG20, demonstrated a remarkable fourfold increase in three-year survival rates by disrupting the tumor’s food supply. Conducted across five countries, the international trial led by Queen Mary University of London included 249 patients with pleural mesothelioma, revealing significantly improved survival compared to those on a placebo-chemotherapy regimen. This development represents a crucial advancement in addressing a cancer known for its historically low survival rates.
The groundbreaking drug, the first of its kind successfully combined with chemotherapy in two decades, provides a ray of hope for thousands globally diagnosed with mesothelioma. The study’s positive outcomes underscore the potential of ADI-PEG20 to become a standard treatment option, offering renewed optimism to patients and the medical community alike.
