Roman egg discovered to still have contents

A remarkable find has emerged from a Roman pit in Buckinghamshire—a 1,700-year-old speckled chicken egg, still containing liquid. Discovered during a dig in 2010 alongside artifacts such as a woven basket, pottery, leather shoes, and animal bones, the four eggs were part of an intriguing archaeological uncovering.

Regrettably, three of the eggs were found broken, leaving only one preserved egg. Upon closer examination through scanning, it was revealed that the ancient egg remarkably retained its content, believed to be a mixture of yolk and albumen.

Subsequently, the well-preserved egg has been carefully transported to the Natural History Museum. It has earned the distinction of being declared the oldest unintentionally preserved egg, sparking discussions about the potential extraction of its contents.
