Insights into England's hedges
A recent revelation about the length of England’s hedges indicates that if they were lined up, they could encircle the Earth ten times over. Advanced laser scanning technology has unveiled that England boasts a total of 390,000 kilometres of hedges.

The findings also highlight regional disparities, with the South West claiming the highest percentage of hedges at 24%, led by Cornwall. In contrast, Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire exhibit a smaller percentage.
This report is greeted with enthusiasm, especially considering that approximately half of the hedgerows were lost between the 1940s and 1990s due to widespread farming and development across the country. Although the rate of decrease has slowed since the 1990s, it is still perceived as a looming threat.
The UK government has declared its commitment to creating or restoring 48,000 kilometres of hedgerows by 2037 and an additional 72,000 kilometres by 2050, as outlined in the Environmental Improvement Plan released a year ago.
