A new water-based public health initiative announced

The University of Bath has announced that they are set to host the newest Research England Centre of Excellence.

This new hub has £13 million in funding and is designed to monitor water-based health. The Centre of Excellence in Water-Based Early-Warning Systems for Health Protection, or WBE@Bath, will test water systems for traces of pathogens and other biomarkers, supporting the creation of a public health surveillance system.

Research England, part of UKRI, is investing £8.4 million, two-thirds of the total funding, with the university and its partners contributing the rest. As part of the Expanding Excellence initiative, £156 million supports 18 institutions for key research units. Professor Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern leads the project, focusing on wastewater-based epidemiology for real-time surveillance. The Water Innovation Research Centre includes an ‘urban living lab,’ advanced analytics, a digital water-sensing platform, and testing infrastructure for low-cost community-wide profiling. The initiative aims to detect future epidemics and create five prize fellow positions and a doctoral training partnership.
